Composition refers to the relationship of a number of elements that constitute a drawing. The positioning of shapes is one of those elements.
A viewfinder is a see-through adjustable piece of cardboard that lets you frame and isolate certain parts of the composition you are trying to realize. It is an invaluable tool to plan your composition. You can judge how different shapes are or are not balanced relative to a given focal point. It can be used with both photographs and life subjects. You can easily construct a viewfinder as follows: From a piece of cardboard, cut two identical L-shaped forms. Join the two pieces together using two paper clips so that they form a square frame. Because we used two pieces it is now possible to adjust the window of your viewfinder to the size of the scene you want to view. For the purpose of composing a drawing we must take into account not only the positive shapes (the objects themselves) but also the negative shapes. In addition, you also must see all those shapes in relation to the dimensions of your drawing paper. With your viewfinder as an aid you can now apply some or all of the following guidelines: 1. As already pointed out, be aware of the format of your paper when placing your shapes. 2. Throughout your drawing effort be constantly aware of the location of your chosen focal point. 3. Unify not only the positive spaces but also do the same for the negative spaces. 4. Two equally sized shapes should be positioned more or less the same distance away from the focal point. When one object is much smaller than another then the small object should be proportionately further away from the focal point than the larger one. 5. Generally speaking, a shape-unbalanced drawing or painting will look inharmonious and produce discomfort for the viewer. If this is not your intention you should improve the shape balance. On the other hand, unbalancing your shapes is a good way to purposely create an uncomfortable tension in your work. 6. Objects and/or subjects are best arranged asymmetrically relative to the focal point. Also, tall shapes look often better when they are further away from the focal point, unless they happen to be the focus themselves. 7. For some reason, it is more pleasing to the eye to see a group of an odd number of shapes than a group of an even number of shapes. 8. Your shapes should be arranged in such a way that the eye is always being led back to the focal point. The few guidelines should give you a good start in your handling of shapes. However, remember not to apply the rules too strictly. Give your intuition and natural ability plenty of room when composing your next masterpiece.

We recently purchased a cherry dining room table and chairs. It was listed as being a high-gloss finish. Not being familiar with furniture, wood varieties or how to care for them, I did a bit of research. Not only did I discover how to care for my cherry dining room set, but in the process, I discovered how to care for other wood finishes. The typical finishes on furniture are high gloss, satin gloss, low gloss, oil and antique. Each needs to be treated differently in order to retain their shine and their beauty. (Flyer from Rooms to Go store in Jacksonville, Florida.) 1) High gloss finish furniture. In order to maintain the beautiful finish on my dining room set, it is necessary to use liquid polish or paste wax. Directions state that when liquid is used, let the liquid dry, then shine it with a soft, preferably lint free cloth or dusting rag. If you choose to use a paste based wax, put the wax on the table in a thin coat, and rub it in before it dries. All directions suggest rubbing the paste in with the grain of the furniture for best effects. (www.querycat.com/faq/8d6ca6e539b07e3a5736f3e376700d28) 2) Satin Gloss furniture. You should be sure to choose a polish or cream wax without silicone. Silicone will dull the wood finish on your table or furniture. If you want to go green with cleaning your satin gloss finish furniture, some sights suggest using a combination of raw linseed oil, vinegar, and turpentine. Use equal parts of each. I checked on prices of making this "green" polish, and it is much more expensive than just buying the regular polish for your furniture. (www.corycare.com/faqs.html) 3) Low Gloss furniture. Low gloss furniture is bad about collecting dirt and needs extra protection. Be sure and buy a wax that states it removes surface dirt and soil. You can also buy products for what is called low luster wood. These products will add a light shine to your furniture and will keep dirt away that could ruin the low gloss finish.( askfordirk.com/how-to-take-good-care-of-your-wood-furniture )
4) Oil finish furniture. This is probably the easiest type of furniture finish to take care of. Wash it with a mild soap solution. Some people suggest using a few drops of lemon juice in with the mid soap water. You can use glycerin to bring the shine out. I have one friend who uses baby oil, but I can not find this verified anywhere, so I think I would skip the baby oil unless you have tried it before and it worked for your oil finish furniture. (www.hardwoodartisans.com/pdfs/howtocare.pdf) 5) Antique furniture. My last dining room set was an antique finish. I purchased it at the local Salvation Army store. I always used regular high gloss furniture polish to keep it in top shape. A web site also suggested using Murphys Oil Soap to clean it with to clean it with. (www.furniturecaretips.com/antique-furniture.htm) Hopefully these tips will help you keep your furniture's finish in perfect condition. With the economic hard times, it is easier to keep furniture new looking, than to go to your nearest furniture store and purchase new furniture. While there are also advisable to make good use of some tape products to protect your home decoration and furniture. There are some great tapes such as velcro, floor marking tapes, aluminum tapes that will be very helpful to assist in maintain your home in good shape. |
